Our Team


Xander Mitchell,  Founder

Xander is a senior in Morse College studying History of Art. He has studied in Turkey, Spain, and England and loves long-term travel. He enjoys learning languages, cooking Turkish food, and reminiscing about his barista days.


Emil Friedman, Chief Editor

Emil is a junior in Silliman College majoring in Political Science. While he comes to Yale from upstate New York, his heart lies in Denmark, where he was born. He is interested in non-fiction writing, public policy, and journalism.


Andrew Ballard, Chief Editor

Andrew is a junior in Pierson College who studies English. He grew up in New York, has studied in France, and spends summers in Maine. Mountains, trains, and music are among his favorite things.


Isabella Yang, Editor

Isabella is a sophomore in Saybrook college interested in studying Literature and History. She enjoys reading, writing, getting lost in the lights of New York City on a snowy night, and dancing on empty pavements in sizzling rains of a Kyoto summer.


Adam Lessing, Creative Director

Adam Lessing is a senior from Baltimore studying Biology. He loves exploring the living world and all its intricacies — from the remote corners of the arctic to the elegant organization of bustling cities.  He enjoys slab serif typefaces and being hospitalized abroad.


Standby is a biannual print publication that inspires students to thoughtfully explore the world away from home.
